Brittany Mills, LCSW-C
Psychotherapist
Why I do this work:
I believe everyone is capable of change. Life is a process of learning and growing. Sometimes we need support and guidance from others to help us along in our journey. I know from personal experience how hard it can be to find a therapist that you create a connection with. I strive to create a warm and approachable environment for clients to explore issues that are meaningful to them.
My Education & Experience:
I graduated from Salisbury University, earning two Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Social Work. I earned my Master’s Degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in the Advanced Standing Program with a specialization in Families and Children.
I have over 15 years of post-experience, beginning with 4 years as a foster care social worker. During that time, I took great satisfaction in helping children find stable living environments, whether in foster care, with their nuclear families, or through adoption. Afterward, I transitioned to a hospital setting, where I worked for 10 years. My initial role was in the emergency department, providing psychiatric services and crisis interventions to patients and families. I conducted psychosocial assessments to determine the most appropriate care for those struggling with mental health issues. I also offered support to patients and families during medical emergencies and periods of grief and loss. Additionally, I served as a field instructor for both graduate and undergraduate social work students. After several years in emergency psychiatric services, I transitioned to outpatient behavioral health services within the same hospital system. I have been providing individual and group therapy for over 8 years. Working in a hospital setting during a pandemic helped me discover a passion for delivering telehealth services!
Specialties/passions:
I really enjoy working with anxious teenagers (13+), especially those suffering with sports-related anxieties. Easing those nerves, on and off the field, is a true passion of mine. I specialize in anxiety and depressive disorders in addition to helping my clients adjust to life changes and cope with everyday stressors. I enjoy helping clients navigate relationships and foster effective communication skills, especially within the family dynamic. I love working with couples on improving communication and renewing the spark that might be lost in the chaos of every day life.
My passion is helping women find a balance with life’s demands which includes helping women with issues such as parenting issues, career stressors, self-esteem struggles, and postpartum issues.
My counseling style combines strength-based, cognitive-behavioral, and solution-focused approaches to help individuals achieve their therapeutic goals. I believe in meeting the individual where they are and creating a comfortable environment where clients can feel heard and understood. I strive to create a warm and approachable environment and treat clients with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I enjoy helping individuals identify their strengths and support them as they apply coping skills in their everyday lives.
Not so specialties:
Addictions and end of life issues (terminally ill) are areas outside of my expertise and I would not be a strong fit. I am happy to assist you in finding a therapist that is better suited to your needs.
It takes courage to begin counseling and I look forward to beginning this rewarding process with you!
